Standing tall for over 1,500 years, the Budhas of Bamiyan were once among the world’s tallest standing Buddha statues, carved directly into the cliffs of the Bamiyan Valley. These majestic statues represented a time when the region was a thriving center of Buddhist culture and learning, situated along the ancient Silk Road. Although the statues were tragically destroyed in 2001, their niches still tower over the valley, attracting thousands of visitors who come to witness their grandeur and learn about Bamiyan’s rich history. Surrounded by lush fields and ancient caves, the Buddhas remain a powerful symbol of Afghanistan’s multicultural past and enduring spirit.
